aos 2 Flashcards
food fuels
carbohydrates
fats
protein
carbohydrates
fruit, cereal, bread
-preferred source of fuel during exercise
-digestive system breaks down to glucose in the blood, stored as glycogen at the muscle and liver, excess stored in adipose (fat) tissue
fats (triglycerides)
-butter, cheese, oil
-preferred source of furl when resting
-digestive system breaks down to free fatty acids (FFA’s) in the blood, stored in muscles as triglycerides, excess stored as adipose (fat) tissue
protein
-lean meat, fish, eggs
-preferred fuel source after exercise
-primarily used for growth and repair
-stored as amino acids in the blood and muscles, excess stored in adipose tissue
chemical fuels
adenosine triphosphate
adenosine triphosphate
ATP is the major source of energy for muscular contraction (movement)
Small amounts stored in the muscles (few contractions)
The breakdown of ATP leaves 2 by products; ADP (Adenosine and two Phosphate molecules) and an Pi (Inorganic phosphate)
Needs to be continually rebuilt/resynthesised for extended periods of exercise
how is energy produced
Muscles break ATP
Energy systems make (resynthesise) ATP
(Factories that make ATP)
They do this by finding energy from fuels.
