disturbances.
Different Types of Anxiety
– Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – Panic Disorder (PD) – Agoraphobia – Phobic disorders – Selective mutinism – Substance/medication‐induced anxiety – Condition induced anxiety

- Obsessive‐Compulsive Disorders (OCD)
- Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Acute stress disorder
Prevalence of Anxiety
• 40 million people in the U.S. age 18 years+
18.1% of this age group
Anxiety often coexixts with
substance abuse,
depression
75% of indviduials have first episode by age of
21.5y
Often have
more than one anxiety disorder
• Specific phobias begin in
childhood, usually by
age 7 years
Peripheral Manifestations of Anxiety
• Diarrhea • Syncope • Hyperhidrosis • Hyperreflexia • Restlessness (e.g. pacing) • Dizziness • Tachycardia • Hypertension • Palpitations • Tremors • Urinary frequency, hesitancy, urgency • Tingling in the extremities • Pupillary mydriasis • GI upset
Reticular activating system
– Clearing house for incoming information
– Excites or inhibits motor neurons
• Limbic system
– Regulates emotions and behaviors
– Amygdala response heightened to anxiety cues
– Connected to prefrontal cortex regions
Hypothalamus
– Maintains homeostasis
Norepinephrine system
– Increased NE = increased anxiety
Serotonin system
– Decreased 5HT = increased anxiety
GABA system
– Decreased GABA = Increased anxiety
