What is Panic Disorder
- Recurrent and unexpected panic attacks
- At least 1 month pt must have fear of future panic attacks OR change their behavior d/t the fear

Etiology of Panic Disorder
Classical/Operant?
Classical conditioning
Panic is a conditioned response to a neutral stimulus that has been paired with a sitmulus that naturally produces fear
Treament of Panic Disorder
- CBT
- Systematic Desensitization
- Meds-Antidepressants or benzodiazepines
What is Agoraphobia?
Persistent and excessive fear of 2+
1. Using public transportation
2. Open spaces
3. Enclosed spaces
4. Crowds
5. Being outside of the home alone
Due to not being able to get medical help
Specific Phobia
Persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation
Marked distress or impairement in functioning
Examples: blood, spiders

1. Systematic Desensitilization
2. Exposure therapy
Social Anxiety Disorder
Excessive, persistent, and unrealistic fear of social situations
What does “performance only mean”
Social Anxiety Disorder
Fear is restricted to speaking or performing in public
Tx of Social Anxiety Disorder
- Cognitive
- Behavioral Therapy
- Meds-SSRI and anti-hypertensives for physical symptoms
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Diagnosis of exclusion

Separation Anxiety Disorder
Length and symptoms
- Symptoms persist 1+ month
- Marked distress (mental or physical) when the person is serpated from the person they are attached to
- Dx usually around 7-8 yrs of age

- Refusal to speak but not due to lack of knowledge or communication disorder
- Symptoms last for 1+ month
- Onset usually 5-6 yrs old-improved by age 10

- Medical Conditions (thyroid problems, menopause)
- Substance induced (caffeine)
What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Recurrent obsessions and/or compulsions
- Obsessions/compulsions are time consuming, distressful or disruptive
- Symptoms are not explained by other disorder
Does OCD have a genetic component?
YES, strong
Some show an overactivity of specific brain circuitry or serotonin deficiency
Tx of OCD
- Behavioral Therapy (Exposure and Response Prevention)-results within 2-3 weeks
- Pharmocological (SSRI and 1 TCA)
- Psychosurgery (cingulotomy, capsulotomy)
- Deep Brain Stimulation
- Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale -useful to monitor symptom changes over time

Body Dismorphic, Hoarding, Excoriation
Trichotillomania
