ANTITUSSIVES Flashcards
1
Q
CENTRALLY-acting antitussive drugs:
A
- dextromethorphan
- codeine
- hydrocodone
- pholcodine
2
Q
mechanism of action:
A
- dextromethorphan → centrally acting. D-isomer of potent opioid agonist → suppress coughing
- codeine & hydrocodone → decrease sensitivity of cough centers in CNS to peripheral stimuli → decrease mucus secretion
- lidocaine → locally acting anesthetic
3
Q
indication:
A
dextromethorphan:
1. for cough 2. safer than codeine
codeine & hydrocodone:
1. excellent antitussive activity 2. liquid preparations
4
Q
side effects:
A
dextromethorphan → no CNS effect
codeine & hydrocodone:
1. very little effect on CNS 2. constipation, dysphoria, fatigue
5
Q
PERIPHERALLY-acting antitussive drugs:
A
- lidocaine
2. benzonatate
6
Q
the OPIOID cough suppressants include:
A
- codeine
- hydrocodone
- dextromethorphan
