Antiepileptic Drugs Flashcards
What two anticonvulsant drugs are licensed for vet use?
Phenobarbital (epiphen) - Canada Pottasium Bromide (KBr), Primidone - USA
What other anticonvulsant drug is used commonly?
Levetirectam (keppra)
What drug can be used for status epilepticus? What else can this drug be used for?
Diazapam
- used for behavioural disorders, appetite stimulant and preanesthetic
what drug is often used with Levetiracetam?
PB and KBr fr cluster seizures
What are the down sides to levetiracetam?
- “honeymoon period”
- cost
- complience (need alot of doses b/c short half life)
- not good alone
Compare PB and Levetiracetam?
PB is more effective but a little less safe
What significant about PB and hepatic enzymes?
lower steady state due to hepatic enzyme induction. increases clearance and lowers concentrations
What are some newer anticonvulsants?
- Gabapentin/pregabalin
- imepitoin
- Topiramate
What is GABA/pregabalin?
structural analogue of GABA
- doesnt really appear to impact GABA receptors
What is Zonisamide (Zonagran)? and its MOA?
sulfonamide based anticonvulsant
- no human/vet products but have compounded forms
- decrease lipid peroxidation
- scavenges free radicals
- may block Na or Ca channels
- may increase serotonin/dopamine NT
