Anticonvulsant Drugs Flashcards
Define: Seizure
Periods of altered brain function due to recurrent abnormal electrical impulses
Define: Epilepsy
Recurrent seizures caused by a brain abnormality
Define: Convulsions
Seizure characterized by spastic muscle movement
Define: Partial Seizure
- Spastic muscle contraction in a limb & facial muscles
-May experience Hallucinations - Develop apparent blindness or behavioral abnormalities
Define: Status Epilepticus
A continual seizure
Phases of a seizure?
- Preictal Phase
- Ictal Phase
- Postictal Phase
Define: Preictal Phase
- First phase of a seizure
- Before the seizure occurs technically
- Animal may begin pacing, panting, anxiety, & apprehension
Define: Ictal Phase
- Second phase of seizures
- When the seizure occurs technically
- Last 1-2 minutes
Define: Postictal Phase
- Third phase of a seizure
- After the seizure subsides
- Animal may appear tired, confused, & anxious
Causes of seizures?
- Idiopathic
- Hypoxemia (Lack of oxygen)
- Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels)
- Hypocalcemia
- Toxins
- CNS infections (Strychine Organphosphates)
- CNS Tumors
- CNS Trauma
- Renal Failure
- Liver Disease
Phenobarbital is what type of drug?
Anticonvulsant
Phenobarbital starting dose?
2mg/kg
is Phenobarbital a controlled substance?
Yes
Phenobarbital is available in what formulations?
Injectable & Tablets
Is Phenobarbital a highly or low protein bound?
Highly protein bound
*Aspirin & Sulfonamide displace it from the proteins
Phenobarbital side effects?
- Sedation
- Incoordination
- Lethargy *most common
- Liver Disease
- Anemia *Rare
Phenobarbital requires what type of dosage?
Loading dose & therapeutic dose for long term care
Potassium Bromide is what type of drug?
Anticonvulsant drug
Potassium Bromide is commonly used in conjunction with what to control seizures
Phenobarbital
*Especially when liver disease is a concern
Potassium Bromide has a narrow or wide therapeutic index?
Narrow therapeutic Index
Potassium Bromide is eliminated through the?
Kidney without being metabolized
Is a loading dose required when prescribing potassium bromide?
Yes - Loading & therapeutic drug concentration monitoring necessary
Potassium Bromide side effects?
- Gi Irritation
- Sedation is seen in toxicity cases
Potassium Bromide available formulations?
Powder that is mixed with dextrose or corn syrups for oral administration
Is Potassium Bromide a controlled substance?
No
Levetiracetam is what type of drug?
An Anticonvulsant drug
Levetiracetam clinical use?
- Used on dogs/cats when Phenobarbital &/or Potassium Bromide aren’t controlling seizures adequately
- Neurologists state this is & Zonisamide are preferred due to lower side effects but its controversial
Is Levetiracetam preferred for Cats?
No still use phenobarbital
Levetiracetam is given what route?
Orally
- Must be given 3 times daily
Is Levetiracetam a controlled substance?
No
Zonisamide clinical use?
- Used on dogs/cats when Phenobarbital &/or Potassium Bromide aren’t controlling seizures adequately
- Neurologists stats that this & Levetiracetam are preferred due to lower side affects but its controversial
Zonismade is given?
Orally - Every 12 hours
What are the ideal anticonvulsant for dogs?
Levetiracetam
Zonisamide
What is the drug of choice for emergency treatment of seizures in animals?
Diazepam & Midazolam
Diazepam are given which route?
- Diazepam can only be given IV
Midazolam is given which route?
- IV is most effective
- IM
- Orally has poor effect in dogs
Does Diazepam or Midazolam have a short duration?
Diazepam
Diazepam is metabolized in the?
Liver
Diazepam & Midazolam are also used as?
Appetite stimulant & to prevent urine marking & anxious cats
