Anthropometry (chapt.10) Flashcards
anthropometry
science of measuring human bodies especially on a comparative basis. Anthropometry was a pseudoscience used mainly to classify potential criminals by facial characteristics. Has practical uses:
- Assess nutritional status
- Design equipment (body dimensions, objects) work station, Buildings
Human Variability
age sex radical and ethnic group occupational generational or secular change over time
statistics
Most body data comes in statistical terms means (average),standard deviation, range, median, peakedness, flatness
Percentile
Percentiles are use to select subjects for fit test. Any body dimension, design value,or score of a subject can be exactly located.Seat height as fitting a certain value of lower leg length. Percentile helps in the selection of person to use a given product.
Multiply standard deviation S by a factor K, selected from anthropometric data table. Then add the product to the mean m
P=m+k*s
If the desired percentile is above is above the 50th percentile, the factor K has a positive sign and the product of KS is added to the mean m; if the percentile value is below average, k is negative and the product kS is subtracted from the mean.
1st percentile is at m-KS with K=2.00
50th percentile is at m with K=0
95th percentile is at m+KS with K=1.64
Work Surface Height-Standing
Different Tasks Require Different work surface heights (NIOSH)
- sitting
- reach
- posture versus motions
