Ankylosing Spondylitis Flashcards
What is Ankylosing Spondylitis
Sacroiliac and Vertebral joint swelling due to new bony formation
What are the RF for Ankylosing Spondylitis
Young
Male
HLAB27
What is the pathology of Ankylosing
Syndesmophytes replace Inflamed spinal damage
Decrease mobility
Decrease mobility
What is the typical patient presentation with Ankylosing
Young male w/ Progressive back Stiffness
Worse in morning and night
Better with use
What are the presentations of Ankylosing
Back stiffness better with use Anterior Uveitis Enthosistis Dactylitis Decrease Lumbar Lordosis ->Kyphosis Low Lumbar Flexion
How is Lumbar flexion tested in Ankylosing
SCHOBER Test shows <20cm flexion
How is Ankylosing Investigated
Xray = Bamboo spine, Syndesmophytes and square vertebral bodies
MRI = Sacroilitis
Bloods = Raised ESR/CRP
HLAB27 Positive
What does the X ray show for Ankylosing
Bamboo spine
Syndesmophytes
Vertebral square bodies
What are syndesmophwytes
Abnormal joining of lateral spine bodies
How is Ankylosing managed
Symptom relief = NSAID
Improvement = TNF-Alpha (Infliximab)
What is the Schober test
Bending has <20cm lumbar flexion
