Animal Reproductive system Notes Flashcards
What are the parts of the reproductive system
The gonads and the genital ducts
What are the functions of the functions of the reproductive system
Meiosis and Gamete production
Meiosis
Endocrine secretion of sex hormones (Cause sex differentiation and reproductive readiness)
Also embryo support
Testes
Testies are plurl form (Testis sing) and Penis is in mammals
These are sacs filled with semifibrous tubules which are the sites of sperm production and support developing sperm.
Interstitial cells
Outside of the tubules in the Testies. Make testosterone.
Spermatic Duct
Can be made to store sperm (eg epididymis in amniotes)
Fed with glands that secrete seminal fluid (Semen)
Ovary
Individual eggs develop Within fluid-filled follicles in the ovary.
Ovary follicle’s
Each one contains one egg and follicular units that secrete estrogen
Ovulation
“Ripe” ruptures to release the egg and the egg must be captured by the oviduct (Fallopian tube)
Special adaptations of the oviduct
- Portions that secrete a protective coating around an egg
- Sperm storage structures (eg spermatheca in salamander)
- Uterus is a place for embryonic development
Terms for specific situations with Uterus
Oviparous, “Gravid”, Viviparity
Oviparous
Egg-laying seen in all vert classes
Gravid
With eggs (fertilized)
Oviparous
Eggs hatch in the uterus and then give live birth
Viviparity
Live birth with placenta (Sac with nutrience) No yolk. Filled with vessels and membranes that embryo and host blood separate and allow factor exchange.
Most mammels have placentas
