animal physiology (introduction to animals) Flashcards
what is physiology?
the function of systems
there are several ways to approach the study of animals what is the taxonomic approach?
through the different classes of animals
there are several ways to approach the study of animals what is the developmental approach?
through stages of development
there are several ways to approach the study of animals what is the systematic approach?
looking at a specific system and make comparisons and connections
7 main defining characteristics of animals
- Eukaryotic
- multicellular
- no cell walls– flexible
- heterotrophs
- store energy in C-H-O as glycogen
- reproduce sexually
- they are motile
what is a asymmetric body plan?
body plan lacks symmetry
what is a radially symmetric body plan?
symmetry around an axis (round)
what is a pentaradial symmetry body plan?
special form of radical symmetry in 5 plans (like a starfish)
what is bilateral symmetry?
2 equal pieces
what are the two types of developmental stages?
- Protostomes
2. Deuterostomes
what is the division type to form 8 cells for both Protostomes and Deuterostomes
- Protostomes: spiral
2. Deuterostomes: radial
what is the blastopore fate for both Protostomes and Deuterostomes
- Protostomes: mouth
2. Deuterostomes: anus
what is development for both Protostomes and Deuterostomes
- Protostomes: determinate
2. Deuterostomes: interterminate
what are germ layers and what are the two we are focusing on?
germ layers are groups of cells that interact with each other during embryonic development and lead to the formation of all organs and tissues
we are focusing on two and three germ layers
what is the two germ layer?
real name- diploblastic: made of the ectoderm (outside tissues) and endoderm (inner linings of the body -digestion )
