animal physiology (internal transport) challenge #4 Flashcards
what is a circulatory system?
a specialized system in which materials can be “efficiently” transported through the body
what are the Three Basic Components of all Circulatory Systems?
- Muscular Pump
- System of conduits
- Fluid that is circulated
what is the simplest form of a muscular pump?
Pulsatile Blood Vessel
how does the Pulsatile Blood Vessel work?
Blood vessel is lined with muscular tissue which allows the contraction of the tissue to push the circulatory fluid through the system
how are the more complex hearts different than the simple muscular pump?
application of valves and expansion of musculature to move circulatory fluids
what are the Two Basic Types of Circulatory Systems?
- Open System (fluid escapes vessels -dumps blood on organs)
- Closed System (fluid always contained)
what are the two types of fluid in each circulatory system?
- hemolymph in open systems
2. blood in closed systems
what are 3 functions of blood?
- transportation
- defense
- regulatory functions
