It needed to be replaced frequently as it was vulnerable to damage to the wood. later it was built from stone instead.

Bailey - surrounding area of the castle that had livestock and workers and stables.

A

Many anglo-saxon homes were destroyed.
The castle was built by “forced labour” of Anglo-Saxons.
The Castellan (castle leader) could easily call for people in the area to provide things that the castle and its garrison needed.

A

Palisade - A wall surrounding the bailey that was hard to get through
Ditch/Moat - Made it hard for people to enter the castle.
Drawbridge/gate - Allowed only one entrance and exit to reduce possibility for invaders.
