Bailey - surrounding area of the castle that had livestock and workers and stables.

The Castellan (castle leader) could easily call for people in the area to provide things that the castle and its garrison needed.

Palisade - A wall surrounding the bailey that was hard to get through
Ditch/Moat - Made it hard for people to enter the castle.
Drawbridge/gate - Allowed only one entrance and exit to reduce possibility for invaders.
