What is a Shire?
An earldom was split into shires. each shire was split into Hundreds (about 100 hides of land)
What is a hide?
An area of land about 120 acres.
What is a shire-reeve?
Later Sheriff
King’s representative in local government. Enforced laws. geld tax.
What is Wergild?
The act of taking revenge. Families would be given compensation by murderer’s family
What is a Writ?
Official written testament from king.
What is HUE and CRY?
Members of a tithing duty to hunt for criminals as a collective responsibility.
What is a tithing?
A group of 10 households inside a hundred.
What is a ceorl?
A free peasant farmer.
What is Knight service?
The duty to provide knights for the king to the general fyrd for up to 40 days per year. Many did not have much experience fighting.
What is Land Service?
Farming on the vassals land. They vassal would give them land to work on, and in return peasants give them food.
What is Homage?
Public display of allegiance to the king. This was needed when earning land as if the previous landowner died, their heir would have to pledge allegiance and pay for land again.
What is Forest Law?
William enforced protection of the forests for hunting.
Many evicted to make space for forests.
Animals and vegetation forbidden to be damaged or poached.
What is a Castellan?
A castle leader
What is a Burh?
A Anglo-saxon town
What is a keep?
A fortified tower built on motte and bailey castles.
