anatomy quiz 1 Flashcards
the study and understanding of structures (form)
Anatomy
How the structures work (function)
Physiology
the structure, shape, and size of the physical traits, or characteristics of an organism.
Form
work or operate in a proper or particular way.
Function
organs and tissues that are visible to the naked eye.
Gross anatomy
the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
Cell
a group of cells that have similar structure and that function together as a unit
Tissue
a collection of tissues that structurally form a functional unit specialized to perform a particular function.
Organ
a group of organs that work together in the body to perform a complex function
Organ system
an individual living thing that carries on the activities of life by means of organs which have separate functions but are dependent on each other
Organism
the chemical reactions in the body’s cells that change food into energy
Metabolism
the ability of the body to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions
Homeostasis
enhance or amplify changes; this tends to move a system away from its equilibrium state and make it more unstable.
Positive feedback loops
dampen or buffer changes; this tends to hold a system to some equilibrium state making it more stable
Negative feedback loops
anatomical concepts often used by health professionals to describe how your body moves during exercise or other activities
Body planes
