anatomy of the nervous system 1 Flashcards
where is the primary motor cortex?
precentral gyrus
what does the central sulcus divide?
frontal from parietal lobe
where is the primary sensory cortex?
postcentral gyrus
what are the 3 types of fibres in white matter?
- association
- commissural
- projection
what are association fibres and name 2
- connect one area of cortex with another in the SAME hemisphere
- superior longitudinal fasiculus
- inferior longitudinal fasiculus
what are commisural fibres and name 2
= connect the cortex of one hemisphere with the opposite hemisphere
- corpus callosum
- anterior commissure
what are projection fibres and name 2
= connect the cortex with subcortical regions (thalamus, basal ganglia, brainstem and spinal cord)
- corona radiata
- internal capsule
what is the basal ganglia and what does it consist of?
= a collection of nuclei within the cerebral hemisphere involved in the control of movement and posture
- caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus
- involved in parkinson’s disease
what is the diencephalon?
what is the thalamus for and what is it either side of?
- either side of 3rd ventricle
- body’s sensory information relay centre
what does the brainstem consist of?
midbrain + pons + medulla
ventral and dorsal surface of midbrain
ventral and dorsal surface of the medulla
transverse section of medulla
what is the cerebellum used for?
- control of movement
- balance
- posture
how many spinal segments are there?
31
why is there a cervical and lumbar enlargement in the spinal cord?
lots of nerve cell fibres for upper/lower limbs
what spinal segments are there?
- 8 cervical
- 12 thoracic
- 5 lumbar
- 5 sacral
- 1 coccygeal
what is the denticulate ligament?
a bit of pia mater attached to the spinal cord at the side
at what level does the spinal cord finish?
L1
what is CSF between?
pia mater and arachnoid mater
what would a cross section of the spinal cord look like?
spinal cord transverse section - label
