Anatomy Lecture 9_Thoracic wall Flashcards

Q

What are the 6 structures in the root of the neck that you need to know and describe their positioning

A

1) Trachea - Located posterior to the manubrium
2) Esophogus - located posterior to the Trachea
3) Veges nerve - Located just anterior of the anterior scalene
4) Phrenic nerve- Located just posterior of the anterior scalene
5) Sympathetic trunck - hard to identify, extends superiorally with ganglion
6) Roots/ trunks of the breachial plexus - nuf said

Q

What makes up the venous angle?

A

It is the junction of the internal jugular vein and the subclavian vein. The thoracic duct of the lymph system enters here

Q

What are the branches of the subclavian artery medial to the anterior scalene. Where do the go.

A

Vertebral - runs superiorally and enters the transverse foramen
Internal thoracic - runs inferiorally and enters the thoracic cavity just posterior of the clavical
Thyrocervical trunk -
1) Suprascapular - extends posteriorlaterally to the posterior muscles of the scapula
2) Transverse Cervical - extends posterior to the deep side of the trapizus
3) Inferior thyroid - extends medially to the posterior of the thyroid
4) Assending cervical - runs superiorally and branches from either the Thyrocervical trunk directly or from the inferior thyroid

Q

What are the posterior branches of the subclavian artery

A

Costocervical trunk

1) Deep cervical - runs posterior and superior to provid blood to the deep muscles of the neck
2) Supreium (superior) Intercostal - runs posterior inferiorally along the neck of the upper ribs

Q

What are the lateral branches of the subclavian artery

A

dorsal scapular - runs from the lateral subclavian artery and posterior and then decends along the medial boarder of the scapula

Q

What are the three divisions of the ribs?

A

1 to 7 - these are true ribs that attach directly to the sternum
8 to 10 - these are false ribs. They connect to the sternum but only through a shared cartilage connection
11 to 12 - these are floating short ribs with no connection to the sternum

Q

What are the 7 joints of the thoracic wall and where are they

A

Sternocostal - junction of the sternum to the cartilage of ribs 1 to 7
Interchondral - shared junction of ribs 8 to 10 to the sternum
Costochondral - junction of the ribs to the cartilage that will join them to the sternum
Manubriosteral - Joins the manubrium and the sternum
Xiphisternal - joins the xiphoid process to the sternum
Intervertebral - joins the vertebra of the spin at the location of the articular processes
Sternoclavicular - the SV joins the sternum and the clavical
