Anatomy Dissection 2 - Gluteal Region (muscles in separate FCs) Flashcards
Superior, inferior and lateral boundaries of the gluteal region?
Superiorly = iliac crests Inferiorly = gluteal fold/ sulcus Lateral = greater trochanter of the femur
What is the name of the part that lies between the buttocks?
Intergluteal cleft
What does the inferior gluteal neurovascular bundle contain?
Inferior gluteal artery, vein and nerve
Spinal nerve roots of the inferior gluteal nerve?
L5, S1 and S2
What does the inferior gluteal nerve supply?
The gluteus maximus muscle
Where is the inferior gluteal neuromuscular bundle located in relation to the gluteus maximus?
Deep to it
What does the superior gluteal neurovascular bundle contain?
Superior gluteal artery, vein and nerve
What are the spinal nerve root values for the superior gluteal nerve?
L5, S1 and S2
Where is the superior gluteal neurovascular bundle?
Deep to gluteus medius
What is the iliotibial tract?
A thickening of the fascia late (deep fascia of the thigh)
Where does the iliotibial tract run?
From the ASIS to the lateral aspect of the lateral tibial condyle at the Gerdy tubercle
Give a function of the tensor fascia latae?
Supports the knee joint
What is the tensor fascia latae?
The muscular part of the fascia lata
Spinal nerve roots of the sciatic nerve?
L4-S3
Where does the sciatic nerve form?
The limbo-sacral plexus of the pelvis
What is the course of the sciatic nerve from where it is formed in the (limbo)-sacral plexus?
Emerges in the middle of the gluteal region then descends and leaves the region to enter the posterior compartment of the thigh
Its branches descend through the popliteal fossa and posterior and lateral compartments of the leg into the foot
What are the spinal nerve roots of the pudendal nerve?
S2-S4
Where does the pudendal nerve form?
in the sacral plexus within the pelvis
From where it is formed within the sacral plexus, what is the course of the pudendal nerve and what does it supply?
Emerges in the middle of the gluteal region and supplies the muscles, skin and fascia of much of the perineum
What is another name for the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh?
Posterior femoral cutaneous nerve
what are the sacral nerve roots of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh?
S1-S3
Where is the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh formed?
In the sacral plexus
What is the course of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh from where it is formed in the sacral plexus and what does it supply?
Emerges into the middle of the gluteal region and supplies the skin over the posterior aspect of the thigh
What type of nerve fibres does the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh contain?
Somatic nerve that contains sensory and sympathetic fibres
What causes a trendelenburg gait?
Damage to gluteus medius, minimus or their nerve supply
Where is CSF taken from during a lumbar puncture?
Why?
The subarachnoid space surrounding the spinal cord at the level of L3/4 (between iliac crests)
Spinal cord ends around L1/2 intervertebral disc level (therefore avoiding injury to the conus modullaris)
Where should intragluteal injections be administered?
Why?
The upper outer (superolateral) quadrant of the buttock
To avoid injury to the sciatic nerve
