standardized position from which to describe directional terms (body standing upright, palms forward, etc.)
Superior
towards head
Inferior
away from head
Posterior
towards the back (dorsal)
Anterior
towards front (ventral)
Lateral
farther from midline
Medial
nearer to midline
Proximal
nearer to attachment of limb (only arms and legs)
Distal
farther away from attachment of the limb
Ipsilateral
same side of the body as another structure
Contralateral
opposite side of the body
Plane
imaginary flat surface that passes through the body

Sagittal Plane
left and right sides of the body
Mid-Sagittal Plane
equal halves
Para-Sagittal Plane
unequal halves
Frontal (coronal) Plane
anterior and posterior portions
Transverse Plane
superior and inferior portions

Posterior Cavity
near posterior surface
2 subdivisions- cranial (formed by skull with brain inside)

near anterior surface thoracic cavity (above diaphragm, contains lungs and heart) abdominopelvic (below diaphragm, contains intestines etc.)
