An Introduction to Clinically Oriented Anatomy Flashcards
Anatomical Terminology
The study of anatomy requires a clinical vocabulary that defines position, movements, relationships, and planes of reference and describes the systems of the human body
Anatomical Position
Describes the human form in a fixed state.
-Standing erect, facing forward
-Arms hanging at the sides, palms facing forward,
Legs placed together, feet directed forward
Planes of the Body
The human body being a three dimensional object must be divided into a series of three dimensional planes in order to facilitate description
Includes: Frontal, Sagittal, Transverse
Sagittal plane
Divides into right/left, median, or midsagittal (exactly down the middle) , or parasagittal
Frontal/coronal plane
Divides into anterior/ posterior
Transverse/horizontal plane:
Divides into superior/inferior
Anterior/Posterior
Also known as ventral and dorsal respectively.
Anterior: Nearer the front
Posterior: Nearer the back
Superior/Inferior
Also known as cranial and caudal respectively.
Superior: Upward or nearer the head
Inferior(caudal): Downward or nearer the feet
Medial/Lateral
Medial: Toward the midline or median plane
Lateral: Farther from the midline or median plane
Proximal/Distal
Proximal: Near a reference point
Distal: Away from a reference point
Superficial/Deep
Superficial: Closer to the surface
Deep: Farther from the surface
Palmar
the surface of the hands and fingers corresponding to the palm
Plantar
The surface of the foot and toes corresponding to the sole
