An Córas Sláinte in Éirinn Flashcards
People spend a lot of time discussing he health system and politics, and of course politicians themselves
Caitheann daoine go leor ama ag plé faoi gcóras sláinte agus cursaí polaitíochta, agus dar ndóigh faoi na polaiteoirí féin
And it is widely believed all over the country that the government is not working for the good our the people but only for their own good
Agus creidtear go forleathan ar fud na tíre nach bhfuil an rialtas ag saothrú ar mhaithe na ndaoine ach amháin ar mhaithe leo féin
They are condemned when they give themselves an payment increase
cáintear iad nuair a thugann siad ardú pá dóibh féin
and especially when there is a lack of services available in our hospitals all over the country
agus go h-áirithe nuair a bhíonn easpa seirbhísí ar fáil in ár n-ospidéil féin ar fud na tíre
Before the election many promises were made to us about the health system
Roimh an todhcán deireanach, rinneadh an-chuid geallúintí dúinn faoin gcóras sláinte
It was promised that there would be a great number of extra beds in every hospital all over the country
Gealladh go mbeadh líon mór leapacha sa bhreis i ngach ospidéal ar fud na tíre
In addition, it was promised that there would be more jobs available for our newly-qualified doctors
Anuas ar sin, gealladh go mbeadh níos mó postanna ar fáil dár gcuid dochtúirí nua-cháilithe
Not only that but they also promised that an end would come to the long waiting list to get an appointment with the doctors or the surgeon
Ní amháin sin ach gheall siad chomh maith go dtiocadh deireadh leis na liostaí fada feithimh chun coinne a fháil le dochtúirí nó leis an máinlia
But the one thing that they didn’t promise us was that no other big mistake would be made as had been made only a few years ago
Ach an rud amháin nár gheall siad dúinn, ná nach ndéanfaí aon bhotún mór eile faoi mar a rinneadh sna blianta beaga anuas
And of course we can’t ever forget about that horrible mistake
Agus dár ndóigh ní féidir linn dearmad a dhéanamh riamh ar an mbotún uafásach sin
Trials were done on some women in Port Laois Hospital, and according to the results of the trials they were healthy
Rinneadh trialacha ar roinnt mná in Ospidéal Port Laoise, agus dar le torthaí na dtriaileach bhí siad slán folláin
But then it came to light that the story was not how they thought
Ach ansin tháinig sé chun solais nach raibh an scéal faoi mar a cheap siad
They had to go through extra trials and it came out that nine were very sick for years
Bhí orthu dull faoi thrialacha sa bhreis, agus fuarathas go raibh naoinúr an-tinn le cianta
We all remember the woman from county Kilkenny that spoke out openly about inequality in our own health system
Is cuimhin linn go léir an bhean ó Chontae Chill Cheannaigh a labhair amach go hoscailte faoi mhíchthromacht in ar gcóras sláinte féin
She chose not to buy insurance and because of that she had to wait a long time before she went under the knife and by then it was too late
Roghnaigh sí gan árachas a cheannach agus dá thaorbhe, bhí uirthi fanacht le tamall fada sula ndeacaigh sí faoi scian agus ansin bhí sé ró-dhéanach
unfortunately she is not among us today to tell the story as she died shortly after that
Faraor níl sí in ár measc inniu chun an scéal a insint dúinn toisc gur bhfuair sí bás go gairid ina dhiaidh sin
But if she had had the insurance, she was told that she would be able to get a private appointment with her surgeon many months before and we are sure that she would be alive today
Ach dá mbeadh an t-árachas aici, dúradh léi go mbeadh sí in ann coinne príobháideach a fháil lena máinlia roinnt mhaith míonna roimhe sin, agus táimid cinnte go mbeadh sí beo inniu
Even though a story like this is a tragedy, it is not an isolated incident
Cé go bhfuil scéal mar seo tragóideach, ní scéal aonair é
The likes of it is widely and daily around us
Tá a leithéid ag tarlú go forleathan agus go laethiúil inár measc
and even though we don’t hear about them on the radio, it is not to be said that they are not there
agus cé nach gcloisimid iad ar an raidíó, ní hé sin le rá nach bhfuil siad ann
Of course, you have a better chance to survive if you become ill abroad, and that is not something to be proud of
Dar ndóigh, tá seans níos fearr agat chun teacht slán as má éiríonn tú tinn thar learm agus ní rud é sin chun a bheith bródúil as.
Closer to home, on the wards themselves, there is a long list of problems there
Níos cóngaraí dúinn ar na bardaí féin, tá liosta fada fadhbanna ann
The nurses work from morning to night for an inferior pay
Oibríonn na h-altraí ó dhubh go dubh le haghaidh pá suarach
And on a recent visit to a private hospital, I wasn’t able to believe the horrible sight that was before me
agus ar cuairt le déanaí chuig ospidéal príomháideach, ní raibh mé in ann a chreidiúnt an radharc coscrach a bhí ós mo chomhair
Drops of blood on the floor, injections and needles laying beside the sink, thick dust under the beds and grime on the windows
Braonta fola ar an urlár, instealadh agus snáthaid ina luí in aice doirtil, deannach go tiubh faoi leapacha agus salachar ar na fuinneoga
The living conditions, ignoring the health conditions, better in Calcutta and that is not a lie
Bheadh coinníollacha maireachtála gan bacadh le coinníollacha sláinte ní ab fhearr i Calcutta agus ní bréag atá ann
If the health system and the health service are failing, and of course they are
Má tá an córas sláinte agus an seirbhís sláinte ag teip, agus dar ndóigh tá siad
Is there anything that anyone can do to reduce the worry, scare and anger of our citizens?
an féidir le h-aon duine aon rud a dhéanamh chun imní, eagla agus fearg ár saoránach a laghdú?
Alas one can’t, but there is a broad range of things that we should do to improve the story
Faraor géar níl, ach rá lear mór rudaí be cheart dúinn a dhéannamh chun an scéal a fheabhsú
The hospitals are not in a healthy state at all, because they are in debt with the government
Níl na h-ospidéal i ríocht folláin ar chor ar bith, toisc go bhfuil siad i bhfiacha leis an rialtas
The government should wipe out those debts for the sake of life
Ba cheart don rialtas na fiacha sin a chur ar ceal ar son na beatha
In addition, there should be more places made in the 3rd level colleges to give professional training in medicine to students that give more than 500 points in the leaving and want to be doctors
Anuas ar sin, ba cheart níos mó áiteanna a bhunú sna coláistí tríú leibhéal chun traenáil gairmiúl sa leigheas a thabhairt do dhaltaí a fhaigheann breis is cúig céad pointí san ardteist agus atá ar intinn chun a bheith ina ndochtúirí
In many cases there are specific students with reasonably good leaving certs who are much more suitable as medics that those with very high points
I roinnt mhaith cásana tá daltaí áirithe le h-arteist réasúnta maith i bhfad níos oiriúnaí mar lucht leighis ná iad siúd le pointí cuimse ard
Daily paiteints have to make a long journey to get services that are not available in there own local hospital
Go laethiúil bíonn ar go leor othair turais fhada a dhéanamh chun freastal ar sheirbhísí nach bhfuil ar fáil ina n-ospidéal áitiúl féin
Worse than that, many people have to go abroad because they don’t have to specific services or machines available in this country
Níos measa ná sin, tá ar roinnt mhaith eile dul thar lear, toisc nach mbíonn na seirbhísí nó na h-innill ar leith ar fáil sa tír seo
But even if they were available, with a long waiting list to get an appointment, frequently one would die before they got the appointment
ach fiú amáin, le liosta fada feithimh chun coinne a fháil, is minic go bhfaigheadh an duine bás sula bhfaigheadh sé an choinne
And isn’t that scandalous?
Agus nach scannalach é sin?
As the story is today, Ireland is nearly as bad as the poorest countries in the third worls
Faoi mar atá an scéal inniu, tá Éire beagnach chomh h-olc leis na tíortha is boichte sa tríú domhan
And wouldn’t that type of thing put a shiver of despair running through you?
Agus nach gcuirfeadh a leithéid cruitán éadóchais ag gabháil tríot?
