AMP Flashcards
A01.1
AMP is based on the idea that anger = crime and antisocial behaviour, therefore if anger is reduced, crime and recividism should decrease
the theory behidn it is that it gets rid of distorted thinking patterns in either prision or group therapy
the aim is to increase awarness of agression, allow the individual ton motnitor their agression and educate individuals on the effects of their behaviour e.g. unable to see family and allow them to learn techniques to reduce agression and practice them
A03.1
strength- better than TEP as it allows individuals to actually learn skills that can be used in different contexts and recividism wont occur when programme is removed. more likely last in long term perminantly changing distorted thinking patterns as it idintifies individuals triggers and provides them with skills to deal and avoud the trigger from causing agression.
weakness: although for AMP to work the individual must have motivationand want to participate. must be capeable of self evaluation. therefore not suitable for all individuals with anger issues.
therefore this casues other issues in the studies on anger management as if individuals are chosen based on whether thry are suitable for the treatment this creates a bias sample making AMP seem better than it may be for the whole population not just a population that would benefit from it most.
A01.2
stage 1 - cognitive preperation
- identofying triggers and anger provoking situations
-preparing anger diary recording duration and frequency of anger - riase awarness
- discuss negative effects of anger
- identify thought patterns and question and challenge them
A03.2
strength- no physical side effects like MPA and CPA decreasing attrition people more likely stay on the trratment reducing recivivism
weakness- focuses mainly on cog and behavioural aspects of cause of anger not considering biological and other influences on crime e.g. testosterone, reductionist therefore may be better alongside hormone therapy
A01.3
skills aquisition
-developing effective coping skills e.g. non contact sport, triangle breathing, assetiveness training , asserttive not agressive. practice so that it becomes an automatic response
A03.3
strength- ireland studied 50 prisoners CALM and 37 controls, found 92% prisoners had shown improvment on atleast 1 behaviour on a questionaire and bhevaior checklist, most improvment offenders judged to be violent before began
weakness- only shows short term effect not LT dont know about reciviism effectivness
weakness of questionaires spcial desirability of prisoners
A01.4
application and practice
- role plays using anger provoking scinarious that triggered intitial anger outnurst practice anger techniques learnt in sessions, controlled envoronemnt
A03.4
strenghth- no social control unlike hormone treatment, individuals have rto be willing and motivated to participate not forced unlike drugs in some cases, power balence ,people more likely comply and engage, collabriative treatment
weakness- LAZA and LAZA compared violent - violent and non violent offenders and rapists and non rapists using CBT fiund no significant differencewhen using AMP
application
howells found that thoes who were motivated to improve showed the most improvment therefore important to find suitable candidates for programme to be max essectivness, drugs better for thoes who are unmotivated and need a quick treatment but AMP’s better for ling term as target root cause ans reduce recivivism
