"Amoebas" Flashcards
Why are “amoebas” problematic?
They have no synapomorphies and are strung throughout different clades
Types of pseudopodia

Filopodium
Branching finger-like actin filaments
Reticulopodium

Means ‘net’
Axopodium
Consists of an axial rod surrounded by an ectoplasmic sheath and that is typically present in Radiolaria and Heliozoa.
Really thing, looks like sunshine ray
How are “amoebas” classified?
By their function and their pseudopod shape
Pathogenecity of “amoebas”
Ability of cause disease, Two groups are in “amoebas”
Neuramoebids
Parasites in fish, causes whirling disease. 10-20 cases of death a year, gotten from ponds here in mid-west
Entamoebids
Causes dysentery (digestive system issues)
