what’s the definition of social control?
A
- trying to change behaviour of another individual
- normally used when there is a power relationship
- some uses is that the individual is unaware that control is being used and can’t avoid it

what’s the definition of reductionism?
A
- belief that human behaviour can be explained by breaking it into smaller components
- holism says that explanations should take a wider perspective such as interactions between other individuals

A
nature = behaviours which occur due to genes therefore all behaviour is hard wired
nurture = behaviour which has occurred due to the environment, so we develop behaviour due to experience

A
- implications beyond research that impacts individuals represented by sample
- people can be treated differently based on the way research findings are interpreted
- however it can help raise awareness of issues in society

- include trying to control research to increase reliability
- include sampling participants and choosing which research method is most appropriate to investigate a topic
- balance realism with control

alpha = overstimulating differences between genders
beta = underestimating differences between genders

- etic = behaviours which occur universal to all cultures

- relies on the hypothetico-deductive method which involves testing theories by accepting or rejecting hypothesis
- has to have controls to establish a cause effect rs
- scientific research should be based on directly observable scenarios — empiricism

- reduction = reducing no. of animals used by repeated measures design
- replacement = using animals that have low consciousness instead
- refinement = use procedures to make sure animals aren’t harmed for no reason and they have necessary requirements
