what is random sampling?
A
- when every member of the population has a chance of being selected
- e.g by using a random generator on the internet

what is volunteer sampling?
A
- samples collected by asking for people who are willing to take part
- e.g ad on a website

A
- sample produced by selecting people who are the most easily available at the time
- e.g asking people at home

what are the benefits of random sampling?
A
- less likely to have a biased sample as there’s an equal chance of selection
- increases chance of having a representative sample

A
- takes more time and effort than other methods
- a list has to be created first
- not all randomly selected people will take part, so will be more like volunteer sample

A
- convenient way to find people, less people tend to drop out
- good way of getting specialised group of participants

volunteers have personality traits such as willing to help which affects the results

- most convenient as it takes least amount of preparation
- may be the only technique available
