A
what are implications for society if addiction is treated with drug therapy?

why should we help drug addicts?
A
- sharing needles can lead to HIV
- stop babies being born w addictions
- to weaken gangs
- families are broken up because of it

what is methadone and how does it work?
A
- acts as a replacement to heroin and activates same receptors in reward pathways
- does this much slower than heroin
- reduces withdrawal symptoms as binding to receptors still occurs

what’s an arguement for drug treatment?
A
- could be affective as methadone doses can be reduced more easily
- allows addicts to break dependence on opioids more affectively
- therefore, addict will feel less withdrawals and be able to live and work normally, with less cravings. allows them to stop committing crimes

what’s an argument against drug treatment?
A
- reduction of methadone means user will still experience withdrawal symptoms like vomiting
- this deters users from continuing the program and combatting side effects costs more
- therefore, drug therapy may not be effective enough as participants can relapse due to withdrawal factors + it makes the NHS lose money
