Aldosterone and Cortisol Flashcards
What layer secretes Aldosterone?
The Zona glomerulosa
Where does Aldosterone bind to?
Albumin and transcortin
What are the actions of Aldosterone?
It promotes sodium Absorption in exchange for hydrogen and potassium and collects at the ducts of the nephron
Promotes reabsorption of sodium in the epithelial cells of sweat, salivary, gastrointestinal mucosa glands and also increases potassium excretion in sweat and salivary glands
It stimulates Mg secretion
What is the main function of Aldosterone?
To maintain ECF concentration of sodium and ECF volume
What are the main regulators of Aldosterone secretion?
Plasma concentrations of Potassium
Angiotensin 2
How is Potassium concentration regulated?
An increase in plasma will triple the aldosterone rate
Hyperkaleamia acts directly on the cells of the Zona glomerulosa to stimulate aldosterone secretion
What are the functions of cortisol?
Glucose sparing effect
Anti inflammatory
Suppress immune system
What is the glucose sparing effect?
Lipid oxidation
Gluconeogenisis
What are the anti inflammatory effects?
Stabilizing lysosomal membranes
Decreasing phagocytosis
Decrease permeability of blood vessels
What happens when the immune system is suppressed?
Lymphocyte production and antibody production decrease
What is Hirsutism?
When there’s excess hair around mouth and chin this is due to excess of testosterone
What happens when females have an overproduction of androgens?
An enlarged clitoris at birth and masculinizing(deep voice, facial hair and failure to menstruation
What happens when there’s an overproduction of Androgens in Males?
Child becomes muscular
Penis enlarges
Public hair appears and voice deepens as early as 2 -3 years
What is Virilization?
Temporal balding
Deepening voice
Involving of breasts
Enlargement of clitoris
It’s a masculization of a woman
What is Crushing syndrome?
An overproduction of cortisol or corticosterone
