Adrenal Glands Flashcards
What system do the adrenal glands function part of?
Sympathetic nervous system
What are the adrenal glands composed of?
Medulla
Cortex
What hormones do the cortex secrete?
Mineralcorticoids
Glucocorticoids
Androgens
What hormones does the medulla secrete?
Norepinephrine and Epinephrine
What are the 3 layers of the Adrenal glands?
Zona glomerulosa,fasciculata ans reticularis
What chemical does the adrenal medulla secrete?
Acetylcholine
Where is Ach secreted?
The preganglionic sympathetic neurons
Where does Ach bind?
Receptors on Chromaffin cells
What is the purpose of Ach?
It increases the activity of synthesis of adrenalin and noreadrenalin in Chromaffin granules and stimulates exocytosis of chromaffin granules
Why is exocytosis of the Chromaffin granules stimulated?
Because the adrenal medulla is directly innervated by the automatic nervous system
Where does the adrenal glands rise from?
It arises from the sane primitive tissue as the postganglionic cells of the sympathetic nervous system
What effect does the mineralocorticoids?
It affects mineral homeostasis
Which layer are the mineralocorticoids found in?
The Zona glomerulosa
What happens when Aldosterone is produced in greatest amounts in te mineralocorticoids?
It will increase the rate of sodium reabsorption by the kidneys and increasing sodium blood levels
What do the glucocorticoids affect?
They affect glucose homeostasis
Which layer are the glucocorticoids found in?
Zona fasiculata
What is the effect of Corisol on the zona fasciculata?
It will increase fat and protein breakdown and increase glucose synthesis and will decrease inflammatory response
Which layer are androgens found in?
Zona retucularis
What effect do androgens have?
They have masculinzing effects
