Airport Operations Flashcards
If you are taxiing at an unfamiliar airport, what is one way ATC could help you avoid getting lost?
Request a progressive taxi
Describe a RWY Hold Short Line
Yellow, Dashed line indicating the RWY side and the solid line indicates the taxi way area.
What items are you specifically required to readback to ATC?
Directions ( RWYs, RW Xings Headings, Airports, waypoints)
Numbers (RWYs, Headings, Speeds)
Hold-Short
LAHSOs
If ATC tells you to “Line up and wait”, what do they mean?
Permission to enter the RWY and wait, but NOT to take off.
If you have not received your take off clearance within 90 seconds, contact ATC immediately.
If ATC tells you to Line up and Wait, can they issue a landing clearance to an aircraft arriving on the same RWY?
No!
What does it mean when ATC says ‘‘Shortened”?
The RWY has been shortened for construction.
What does ATC mean by “RWY 36 at Echo, intersection departure, 5600 ft available”?
You are to enter and take off of RWY 36 at taxiway Echo
Describe an ILS Critical area marker
Two parallel black lines with bars in-between
What is a Runway Incursion?
Any occurrence where a collision hazard or a loss in aircraft separation occurs with an aircraft taking off, landing, or intending to do so.
What are 4 things you should have done in the DA 40 just before taking the RWY?
- RWY Bugged
- Map Zoomed Out
- Dep frequency set
- Cleared final
Is clearance required to cross the approach end of a RWY?
Yes, but only when ATC explicitly tells you to hold shirt of it.
Describe all 5 legs of the Traffic Pattern
- Upwind/Departure
- Crosswind
- Downwind
- Base
- Final
When should you make your approach calls to an untowered airport?
10 miles out
5 miles out
3 miles out.
What 4 things need to be done before you get 3 NM away from an untowered airport?
Power - 50%
Airspeed - 100kts
Altitude - TPA
Radio calls made
How should you start a decent on the downwind leg?
When abeam the touchdown point OR traffic on final…
1. Power 25%
2. Airspeed 95 kts
3. Flaps takeoff
4. 3-5 degree descent
When considering Wake Turbulence, when would you want to take off and land?
- When a large aircraft is landing before you are landing
- Land after their touchdown point - When an aircraft is taking off before you are taking off
- Rotate after their touchdown point
What is the recommended wake turbulence wait time?
Wait at LEAST 2 mins for taking off and landing to avoid the wake turbulence of another aircraft
When should aircraft be operated on the ground with the transponder in the altitude reporting mode?
At all times when in the movement area
AIM Ch 4 Section 1
What acronym do we use for a VFR approach breifing?
ARTLES
A - Airport & NOTAMs
R - Rwy & its length
T - Touchdown Zone Elevation
L - Lights. Types and availablity, pilot controlled?
E - Rwy exit point & on airport destination
S - Any special considerations (winds/weather, closed rwys or taxiways, approach obstructions)
What is the proper way to exit a traffic pattern
- At a 45 degree angle at TPA
- Straight out at TPA
