Q

what is the ARFF index based on

A

the length of the most demanding aircraft serving the airport and the number of average daily departures. the single most important indicator of the potential size of an aircraft emergency is the largest passenger aircraft serving the airport

what are the indexes

A

A: less than 90 ft

Q

a holder of a class III airport operating certificate may comply with this section by providing a level of safety comparable to index A that is approved by the administrator. Such alternate compliance must be described in the ACM and must include:

A
  1. pre arranged firefighting and emergency medical response procedures, including agreements with responding services
  2. means for alerting firefighting and emergency medical personnel
  3. type of rescue and firefighting equipment to be provided
  4. training of responding firefighting and emergency medical personnel on airport familiarization and communications

Q

how does an extinguishing agent work

A

by smothering the fire to prevent oxygen from mixing with the hydrocarbons, suppressing the release of fuel vapors, separating the combustible materials; or lowering the temperature of the fire through a cooling effect

smothering, suppressing, separating combustibles, lowering temp

6
Q

what is the most common extinguishing agent

A

AFFF: it can seal and suppress the release of fuel vapors, provide a cooling effect, separate combustible materials, and resists breakdown from other chemical agents

7
Q

why are dry chems (potassium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride) used?

A

they “knock down” the fire. they smother a fire by replacing oxygen. once the chemicals dissipate to opportunity for flashback may occur. Foam is a needed backup on large fires

Q

What is an effective fire suppression around engines?

A

halon 1211, it has been discontinued because it depletes the ozone

9
Q

what is an acceptable alternative to halon 1211

A

Halotron 1: distersed as a liquid it turns into a gas at the fire, and robs oxygen. it is considered a clean agent

Q

what is a clean agent

A

something that does not leave residue when it is sprayed, favored for engine and break fires, and used around flight instruments or computers

Index B must carry…

A

one vehicle carrying 500lbs of sodium based dry chem, halon 1211, or clean agent and 1,500 gal of water and the commensurate quantity of AFFF for foam production
OR
two vehicles. one with the requirements of A, with another carrying an amount of water and the commensurate quantity of AFFF so the total quantity of water for foam production carried by boeth vehicles is at least 1,500 gal of water

OR
two vehicles. One carrying requirements for index A, and one additional carrying the amount of water and the quantity of AFFF so the total quantity of water for foam production is at least 3,000 gal

Index E must carry…

A

three vehicles. one carrying requirements of index A. two more carrying the amount of water and the quantity of AFFF so the total quantity of water is at least 6,000 gal
