AI Flashcards
Name 5 advantages of AI.
1) Allows use of old males on younger/lighter females
2) Closed herd
3) New genetic material
4) Semen is proven to be alive
5) Decreased number of males needed
Name 4 disadvantages to AI.
1) Higher level of management
2) Risk of disease is high because one male can spread to many more females
3) Human Error
4) Can make people complacent and start cutting corners
At what age should males first be collected?
Bulls- 1 year
Rams, goats and boars- 7-8 months
Stallions-2 years
What is the most successful routine for semen collection?
Live mounts such as a teaser female, male or castrated male
What is most common collection method for the bull?
AV
Why is it important to use a sterile lubricant?
Too keep semen alive and healthy- Petrolium jelly is spermicidial
Why is it important to use a 3-5 false mounts before collecting?
To increase the muscle contractions and to prepare for a quality ejaculation
What happens to the water temperature throughout the time of collection?
It continues to decrease
Describe electroejaculation.
Probe is placed in the rectum and the nerves supplying the repro system is stimulated with rhythmic pulses.
Describe the collection steps for a boar.
A dummy sow is used on a non slip surface, and after the penis emerges from thrusting the collector will grasp the end of the penis allowing the boar to “lock in”. Semen is filtered into an insulated jar in order to remove gel fraction.
What is a major factor to be considered when collecting from the 4 species?
Stallion, Bull, Ram-Temperature
Boar-Pressure
Which male should have their penis cleaned before collection?
Stallion
What two methods can be used to collect from the ram? Which is most effective? What is important about the temperature?
AV and EE
AV is preferred (EE can contaminate with urine and stressful)
Glass collecting should be warmed
Name the 4 methods for AI for the ewe.
Vaginal, Cervical, Transcervical, laprascopic
What is the most common AI method for a ewe?
Laprascopic
