Aesthetics Flashcards
What is the definition of an aesthetic experience?
Pleasure attained from sensory perception - in itself- during an experience of any kind of artwork, product, landscape
What are the 3 different perspectives why we like things aesthetically?
- Adaptation
- Patterns and/or features
- By-product hypothesis
What is adaptation in aesthetics?
To survive and reproduce, we need to adapt to new and challenging situations
What are patterns and/or features in aesthetics?
Patterns and/or features that are associated with successful adaptation and solutions to challenges, are reinforced because it guides us towards survivals/solutions
What are by-product hypothesis in aesthetics?
Aesthetic pleasure a by-product of some evolutionary adaptive function, we (have com to )derive (aesthetic) pleasure from pattern or features that are advantageous to those functions.
What are adaptive functions of the senses?
- Visual system
- Auditory system
- Tactile system
- Olfactory & taste system

What is the aesthetic-usability effect?
Attractive products are expected to be easier to use (increased sales) are actually perceived easier to use (tell friends, positive reviews - increased scales) and tolerate faults more (reduced support calls, loyalty)
What is the relation between aesthetics and facial features?
- Symmetry, averageness, skin
Physical attractiveness increases:
- Perceived trust
- Perceived expertise
- Liking for the communicator
How can we study aesthetics?
- Experimental approach
- Exploratory approach
- Computational approach
What is the experimental approach in studying aesthetics?
Manipulate isolated elements (e.g. eye color) or general laws (golden ratio)
What is the exploratory approach in studying aesthetics?
Evaluate complete and naturalistic stimuli
What is the computational approach in studying aesthetics?
Machine learning, automated methods that infer the aesthetic quality of images
What is principle 1 of aesthetics?
Maximum effect for minimum means
Voorbeeld: dat bootje op dat schilderij of een metafoor van het biggetje of disjunctive ambiguity (de oude vrouw of vrouw die naar achter kijkt)
What is principle 2 of aesthetics?
Unity in variety
for example the Gestalt principles
What is principle 3 of aesthetics?
Most advanced, yet acceptable (MAYA)
Preference for familiarity –> safe choice
Preference for novelty and originality –> learning new things
Join effects of the two –> MAYA
