aerobic respiration Flashcards
what is respiration?
a chemical reaction
where does respiration happen?
in every cell of every living organism
what is the process of respiration?
releasing energy from food (glucose = sugar)
is respiration similar to breathing?
no, breathing is moving air in and out of the lungs
what does aerobic respiration use and where does it take place?
it uses oxygen and takes place in the mitochondria of animal and plant cells
what does aerobic respiration produce?
glucose and oxygen react and to produce carbon dioxide and water
what is the word equation of aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY
where does glucose come from and where does it go?
glucose comes from food and its carried to the cells in your bloodstream
where does oxygen come from and where does it go?
oxygen comes from the air. When u breathe in, oxygen from the air enters your blood at the lungs and is carried to your cells
what does blood carry and where does it go?
blood also carries carbon dioxide away from your cells - it goes back to your lungs to be breathed out (exhaled)
what experiments can be used to test carbon dioxide?
limewater
how many stages are their in the experiment?
3
what is stage 1?
put some limewater in a test tube. pop a tube (a straw will do) into it
what is stage 2?
take a deep breath and breathe out into the tube. ( you may need to do this a few times).
what is stage 3?
the limewater will turn cloudy, showing that the air you are breathing out contains carbon dioxide
