How does Minoan art/architecture reflect the Minoan’s relationship with the environment?
Their art reflects that they were in awe of the natural world; they were not concerned with warfare, so they could observe the world around them
Why was trade important for the Minoans and how did it show in their early art/architecture?
Trade was important for the Minoans because they were able to have a stable economy, exchanging things like oil and wine; trade is evident in their art and architecture with the many Near East and Egyptian influences in their art
How did the Mycenaeans display their political power?
They displayed their power through their artwork, one example being the Lions Gate, which conveyed a sense of power and fortitude
Palace of Knossos
- largest and greatest of Minoan palaces
- it was an administrative complex
- precursor to Greek theaters
- In Queen’s room, there is a mural of dolphins on the floor

- the men are doing something
- the bull is stylized

Knossos palace is mazelike in plan; large rectangular court, with the rest of the palace arranged around it; three stories, interior light and air wells; columns made of wood; resemble Greek doric order

type of stonework found in Mycenaean architecture, built with massive limestone boulders, roughly fitted together with minimal clearance between adjacent stones and no use of mortar
