  • whether an offence may have occurred
  • whether the victim wishes to make a formal statement

A
  1. Reassess the investigation & consider further investigative procedures are necessary e.g. public safety, preserve evidence
  2. Consider a photograph of the victim e.g. CCTV footage

Procedures prior to Medical

A
  1. Explain the process to the victim
  2. Contact the medical forensic practitioner on call
  3. Arrange a time with medical practitioner
  4. Seek a specialist support worker
  5. Use toxicology kits - remember initial actions if case is acute
  6. Arrange for a change of clothing for the victim
  7. Take a MEK
  8. Ensure officer attending has all the relevant info

Procedures after a Medical

A
  1. Ensure medical examiner has not had contact with suspect
  2. Officer provides all info to examiner
  3. After exam, practitioner seals and labels all samples
  4. Prior to sealing exhibit bags the officer debriefs with the practitioner.
  5. Practitioner seals the kits in officer presence and hands to Police.
  6. Police secure in refrigerator
  7. Police collect and preserve clothing worn by victim
