Adrenergic Antagonists Flashcards
Phenoxybenzamine
nonselective , noncompetitive irreversible alpha blocker ( more to a1)
Phenoxybenzamine Uses
sweating & hypertension w/ pheochromocytoma , Raynaud’s
Phenoxybenzamine Adverse
postural hypotension , reflex tachycardia (A2 blocked = NE release) , congestion , inhibit ejaculation
Phentolamine
Nonselective competitive alpha blocker
Phentolamine Uses
Pheochromocytoma management , post-NE extravasation dermal necrosis
Prazosin
selective a1 competitive blocker (hypertension + BPH)
Tamsulosin
selective a1a competitive blocker (BPH only)
Alpha blockers caution
small doses before bed-time , not used as monotherapy
Alpha blockers Adverse
lack of energy , congestion , floppy iris syndrome
Beta blockers
All are competitive & selective at low doses only
Propranolol
non selective B antagonist
Propranolol Uses
Angina , Supraventricular cardiac arrhythmia , migraines , hyperthyroidism
Nadolol & Timolol
nonselective B blocker / glaucoma ( decrease aqueous humor)
Atenolol & Metoprolol
Selective B1 blockers (hypertension , angina , chronic heart failure)
Acebutolol & Pindolol
antagonist w/ ISA ( weakly stimulate B1 (A) & B2 but don’t allow endogenous ligands to bind)
