Adrenals and Pancreas - Winden Flashcards
What are the parts of the adrenal gland?
Cortex and Medulla
What is the function of the cortex?
Stores lipids (especially steroids and cholesterol) Creates corticosteroids
What is the function of the medulla?
Produces catecholemines
What are the three regions of the adrenal cortex?
Zona glomerulosa, fasciculata, reticularis
What does the zona glomerulosa produce and what does it do?
Mineralocorticoids- aldosterone
Stimulates the conservation of the sodium ions
What does the zona fasciculata produce and what does it do?
Glucocorticoids- cortisol
Accelerates glucose synthesis and glycogen production; also has an effect on anti-inflammatory
What does the zona reticularis produce and what does it do?
Androgens
Sex hormones
Is the pancreas endocrine or exocrine?
Both
What is the General Adaption Syndrome?
aka stress response
3 phases: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion
