Endocrine - Novak Flashcards
What hormones does the posterior pituitary produce?
None; it stores ADH and oxytocin
What does ADH do?
anti-diuretic hormone or vasopressin
Helps with water maintenance and blood pressure
What does oxytocin do?
Females: milk let down, uterine contractions, orgasms
Males: orgasms
Where are ADH and oxytocin produced?
Hypothalamus
What does the pineal gland produce?
melatonin
What does melatonin do?
Derived from seratonin Helps with sleeping Inhibits reproductive functions Antioxidant Helps with circadian rhythm Inhibits GnRH
What is special about the thyroid gland?
It is the largest purely endocrine gland
What does the thyroid gland produce?
T3, T4, and calcitonin
What does T3 and T4 do?
increases metabolism
What does calcitonin do?
increases reabsorption into bone; denser bone
Inhibits osteoclasts and decreases blood calcium
Produced by parafollicular cells
What does the parathyroid gland produce?
Parathyroid hormone Opposite of calcitonin Breaks down bone to increase blood calcium Increases osteoclast activity Produced by chief/principle cells
What hormones do the ovaries produce?
Estrogen- promotes follicle stimulation and maturation; secondary sex characteristics
Inhibins- opposite of estrogen
Progesterin- prepares for breast and uterus for egg release
What hormones do the testes produce?
Testosterone- maturation of sperm and secondary sex characteristics
Inhibins- opposite of testosterone
What hormones do the intestines produce?
Gastrins, Cholecytokinin, Secretin
What hormones do the kidneys produce?
EPO, calcitriol, renin
