Explain the ADIRS Power-up and initialization

A

Each ADIRU switch is turned from OFF to NAV
ON BAT light illuminates for a few sec for each ADIRU
White ALIGN light illuminates for duration of alignment (319: 502-534)
E/WD- IRS IN ALIGN memo during alignment (319: 535-536, 320, 321)
Process takes approx 10 min

What are some indications that an ADIRU has reverted to battery power on the ground?

A

ON BAT light illuminates
External Horn sounds
ADIRU and AVNCS light illuminates in amber on external power panel

What is the significance of a steady FAULT light on the IR?

A

The IR has failed and cannot be recovered.

What is the significance of a flashing FAULT light on the IR?

A

The Navigation Function is lost, Attitude and Heading may be recovered recovered in the ATT mode.

What would happen if an ADR was selected off:

A

ADR 1 Example:
Captain would lose BOATS on his side.
ECAM would instruct you to turn AIR DATA to CAPT 3 on the switching panel.
Captain would regain BOATS, now supplied by ADIRU 3 (Stby Probes/Captain’s TAT Probe)

What functions are lost when an IR is lost?

A
Old Panel (All but the last 2 319s)
You would lose both ADR and IR info. ATT HDG and AIR DATA switches would need to be used to recover missing info.
New Panel (Whole Rest of the Fleet)
With IR push button selected off, you only lose IR data (FAATHAAG) can be recovered with ATT HDG knob on the switching panel

When should you perform a full alignment vs a quick alignment?

A

FULL:
FFoD, Flight Crew change, GPS not available and poor navaid coverage along route, You’ll get it either way if the ADIRU switches are already off.
QUICK:
Anytime FULL is not required but the IRS position and FMGC position are 5+ nm apart

What might cause the ALIGN light to Flash on the ground?

A

PPOS not entered within 10 min for Full Alignment
(3 min for Quick Alignment)
Large Difference in LAT/LONG from shutdown position and Entered Position
A/C being moved during alignment
(IRS IN ALIGN flashes for same logic on E/WD for A/C w/out the ALIGN light)
