AD Flashcards
What is AD gen char
Def: MC dementia that affects memory, higher learning, reasoning, behavior and emotion
W>M
Cause:
tau -> neurofibrillary tangles -> nerve cell death
amyloid precursor protein -> plaques form from clumps -> block cell-to-cell signaling at synapses -> activate immune system to inflame and devour disabled cells
What is major neurocognitive disorder diagnostic criteria (DSM-5)
- Evidence of significant cognitive decline from previous level of performance in cognitive decline
- cognitive deficits interfere with everyday activities
- cognitive deficits do not occur exclusively in the context of delirium
- cognitive deficits not explained by another mental disorder
What is mild neurocognitive disorder diagnostic criteria (DSM-5)
- same as major neurocognitive but modest cognitive decline
What does apolipoprotein E have to do with AD
APOE-4 3-5 x increased risk of AD
APOE-2 2x protection from AD
APOE-3 MC
AD diagnosis
- criteria met for mild or major neurocognitive disorder
- insidious onset and gradual progression of impairment in cognitive domains
- criteria met for probable or possible AD
- disturbance not better explained by other disease
What is probable AD
- evidence of genetic mutation
- clear evidence of decline in memory and learning
- steady, progressive decline in cognition
- no mixed etiology
What is possible AD
- no evidence of genetic mutation
- clear evidence of decline in memory and learning
- steady, progressive decline in cognition
- no mixed etiology
What is testing for AD
Mini-mental status testing (MMSE)
CAM
What is Dgx workup for AD
