acute respiratory distress syndrome Flashcards
define Respiratory failure?
when not enough oxygen passes from your lungs into your blood
define acute respiratory distress syndrome?
quick diffuse alveolar damage + inflammation throughout lungs
explain pathophysiology on how an Infection can lead to ARDS?
Infection –> Diffuse alveolar damage –> ↑permeability of alveolar capillaries –> fluid leaks into alveoli –> pulmonary oedema –> ↓O2 sats, SOB, ↑RR
–> ARDS
how many pts with ARDS end up dying?
-%
40% die
causes of ARDS?
-5
pneumonia, sepsis, aspiration, trauma, acute pancreatitis
main feature on CXR?
bilateral oedema
what do you hear on auscultation?
what is this a sign of?
crackles
Fluid in air sacs
fluid in lungs alveoli is called what?
infiltrate
what is best treatment?
Ventilation
pt has ARDS.
needs organ support.
what do you give?
vasopressors
pt has ARDS from infection and has acutely deteriorated.
what other emergency should you be thinking?
sepsis
vital of pt with ARDS?
- 2 main ones
↑RR
Low O2
main symptom?
Dyspnoea
how should they be positioned?
prone
pt on ward with ARDS clinical picture.
where do you send to treat?
ICU
