ACTIONS
Binds and adsorbs ingested toxins to its surface thereby reducing their absorption by the body through the GI tract
INDICATIONS
Many oral poisonings, medication overdoses
Adult/pediatric dose
1-2 gm/kg, usuall 50-100gms for adults
CONTRAINDICATIONS
ACID/alkali (corrosive/caustic) ingestions
pure petroleum distillates
Intestinal obstruction
Cyanide poisoning
GI bleeding
Pts less than 1yo
AMS with out ability to protect the airway
SIDE EFFECTS
Vomiting Aspiration Diarrhea Constipation Rare bowel obstruction with repeated doses. Black stools Dehydration Electrolyte imbalances
PRECAUTION
Protect airway during administration and upon removal of gastric tube
Do not mix milk products
Caution with decreased peristalsis
Not effective for cyanide, mineral acids, caustic alkalis, lithium, iron, ethanol, or organic solvents
