Acid/Base Disturbances #2 Flashcards
What happens if we have a high CO2 and a low HCO3-?
Mixed acidosis (respiratory and metabolic acidosis)
What occurs when diarreah?
Poop out bicarb= internal bicarb decreases = decrease in pH
Hyperventilation
Causes respiratory alkalosis
What occurs during hypoventillation?
You are not getting rid of the CO2 you are producing.
So CO2 goes up= pH increase= respiratory acidosis
What occurs during hyperventillation?
You are getting rid of more CO2 than you can produce.
= blood pH will increase = respiratory alkalosis
Hypoventillation results in respiratory ______
Acidosis
Hyperventillation results in respiratory _______
Alkalosis.
What has the worst prognosis?
Metabolic alkalosis
In real like, will there only be a change in one of the pHs of PCO2 and HCO3-?
No. Both will change due to mass action.
Thus, in a more realistic situation, what will occur during respiratory alkalosis?
CO2 levels will decrease.
Bicarb will also decrease, but only slightly.
