Q

Where does absorption takes place?

A

Smaller soluble molecules from enzyme reaction are absorbed by the small intestine and are then dissolved in blood plasma

Q

What is plasma?

A

Liquid part of the blood. It carries nutrients arounds for use by cells. Cells need glucose to release energy using respiration.

Q

What is carbohydrates broken down into?

A

Starch and sugars.
Starch is further broken down into smaller sugars by enzymes.

What is diffusion?

A

It is the movement of molecules from higher to lower concentration area to balance it on both sides.

Q

What is visking tube?

A

It is a thin material containing tiny holes to allow only small molecules to pass through..

Q

How is small intestines adapted for quick absorption?

A

The greater the surface area, the greater and faster is the rate of absorption through diffusion. To increase the surface area of small intestine, the walls are folded and contains lots of tiny finger-like structures called villi.Again to add more surface area, each villus cell has a folded top called microvilli.

Thus, there is a lot of room for nutrient molecules to pass between the inside of intestine wall and the blood plasma through diffusion.

Q

What happens in small intestine after a meal?

A

After a meal, there are many more digested molecules inside the small intestines than in blood. This causes an overall movement of these molecules into blood by diffusion.

This is nothing but absorption.

Q

Why do some nutrient molecules move out of blood while others move in?

A

Due to diffusion, the molecules will try to balance their concentration on either side and make it even. Molecules will move randomly in all directions, more will move in because blood has low nutrients molecules since it carries them to cells for use and less will move out till its is even.

Q

Why diffusion allows small intestine ti absorb small soluble nutrient molecules but not large insouluble ones?

A

The blood plasma is liquid. The nutrient molecules need to dissolve in plasma hence they need to be soluble.

They need to be small to be able to pass through the microvilli in plasma through diffusion.

Q

What is effevt of alcohol on digestive system?

A

Drinking alcohol affects lives and pancreas. This causes fewer enzymes to release in small intestines and affects digestion and hence absorption.

Alcohol also damages villi and makes them become shorter.
