Absestosis Flashcards

1
Q

what is asbestosis

A

Asbestosis = diffuse interstitial fibrosis with asbestos bodies (golden brown, fusiform or beaded rods with a translucent center) due to inhalation of asbestos particles in workers engaged in mining, pipes, brakes, insulation and boilers.

Q

what are absestos

A

Asbestos fibres are crystalline hydrated silicates; their different forms (size, shape, solubility) and concentration affect their disease-causing capabilities

Q

Absbestosis are phagocytosed by what?

A

Asbestos fibres are phagocytosed by macrophages and activate the inflammasome, stimulating the release of proinflammatory factors and fibrogenic mediators

Q

The absestos in contract to other dusts can act as what?

A

In contrast to other dusts, can also act as a tumor initiator and tumor promoter

Q

List the two type of fibers for asbestosis

A

Two types of fibers are:
* Serpentine (curly and flexible fibres, chrysotile): These account for most of the asbestos used in industry.
* Amphibole (straight, stiff and brittle fibres, crocidolite, amosite, actinolyte): These are more pathogenic than chrysotiles, particularly with respect to induction of mesotheliomas

Q

what is pleural plaque

A

It is the most common manifestation of asbestos exposure and is composed of well circumscribed plaque of dense collagen containing calcium. They are usually asymptomatic and develop on anterior and posteriolateral parts of parietal pleura and over the diaphragm

Q

What is ment by mesothelioma

A

Localised asbestos fibers in the lung close to the mesothelial layers increases the risk of development of pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. Cpncomitant smoking does not increase the risk of mesothelioma. it is the most specific cancer associated with asbestosis inhalation

Q

The ingestion of asbestos fibers by macrophages sets off a ?

A

Ingestion of these fibers by macrophages sets off a fibrogenic response through release of cytokine growth factors that promote continued collagen deposition by fibroblasts.
