How does bowel obstructions appear on CT?
Distention proximally
Shrunken distally
+/- Mass
What are some GIT complications of Crohn’s?
Perforation
Strictures
Fistulas
Abscess formation
Malabsorption (B12 particularly)
(cancer)
How do left sided colon cancers present?
Bright blood rectal bleeding
Obstruction
Pain
What is an adenocarcinoma?
Gland forming, epithelial origin malignancy
What influences the risk of cancer development in UC?
Activity of disease
Duration of disease
Extent of the disease
What is a severe complication of severe UC?
Toxic megacolon
What are some predisposing factors for colon cancer?
Obesity
Family Hx - FAP, Lynch
Smoking
Where does colon cancers metastasize to?
Liver
Peritoneal
(Lung)
What is the aetiology of IBD?
Not complelety know but probably some break down in the colon barrier
In which IBD do you get granulomas?
Crohn’s
What are some complications of UC?
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (more so than Crohn’s)
Cancer
Toxic megacolon
Perforation, fistulas are much less common as the ulcers aren’t knife like
Where do rectal cancers metastasize to?
Lung
Bone
Liver
How do right sided colon cancers present?
Fe deficiency anaemia
Fatigue
Metastases (later presentation)
Why do R- and L-sided colon cancer present differently?
R bowel is wider so obstructions are less likely
What is the mode of inheritance of Lynch’s syndrome?
Autosomal dominant
