receptors are located in the parietal peritoneum, the muscle and the skin
referred pain
well localised but felt in distant area of the same cutaneous dermatome as the effected organ

nature of the pain
inflammation = throbbing obstruction = colic
observation
patient moving around - colic
patient lying still - inflammation
abdomen moving with respiration -
not general peritonitis
acute
sudden
sharp
intense
localised
usually self limiting
may be associated with physiological changes
chronic
gnawing
aching
diffuse
no clear beginning or end
varies in intensity
associated with physiological and social difficulties
