AAR Flashcards
AAR - Breakaway
“Tanker C/S, Breakaway, Breakaway, Breakaway”
PF:
Disconnect switch HOLD
IDLE (smoothly)
Positive ROD (not necessarily Pitch)
Do not turn if passing under (underrun) the tanker
PM:
Disconnect switch HOLD
“Boom is clear, cleared off the button”
Maintain visual, advise PF a/r
“Well clear” = Nose tail separation
(Strobes ON) pinch pull
Squawk Talk Lights
Nav:
Attempt to establish radar / TCAS contact
Receiver well clear - BA can be terminated
Overrun
Conditions?
Actions
1/2 thru turn, <1/3 initial turn range ~7.5-8
Turn range expected ~23-24nm
Aft of 3-9 on RV G
“Tanker C/S, Execute Overrun”
Slow to 255kts, maintain ALT separation and hdg
Tanker to 310kts
when stable behind
“C/S, Terminate Overrun”
AAR Speeds
> 4nm 330 / .85 +45 IN TRAIL
3nm 310 / .85 +35
2nm 310 / .85 +35
(1.5nm outboards to idle)
1nm 290 / .83 +15
(Realign at 1nm before climbing)
0.5nm 285 / 0.81 +10
(0.25nm crack back thrust to slow to 275)
Based on tanker 275kts
Blue light comes on / remains on during contact?
Failure to disconnect possible
SIG AMP - Manual
Yoke switches to Disconnect should work or AR Release on ARR Panel
Controlled Brute Force D/C if not: coord with boom op, steadily move aft inside envelope. Tanker may continue AR but receiver terminates.
Manual Boom Latching
Check all CBs first, check contact solenoid (see ATTP)
Emergency procedure, Receiver controls D/C
Sec 3 / Fuel Systems / Non critical
SIG AMP Manual, BLUE ON
Contact - GREEN and BLUE
Wait until “Tanker, Contact”
Latch - HOLD
PM “Rec, Contact” (Boom phys pressure released, reduce thrust)
Complete: release using YOKE and/or release AR Panel.
PDL fail during contact
Disconnect
Return to Astern
Notify Tanker
PDL Fail pre contact
Notify Tanker
EMCON 2
Restricted Comms
15 min RV call
Astern radio check (numeric c/s)
“42,55”
“42”
Multiple Tankers
RV on Lead
Within 2 nm of LAST tanker and visual (TAC range Lead = tankers + 1), move to refuel off LAST tanker (should be 500ft increasing ALTs above lead)
Proceed up the chain as required, descend 500ft, ~ 10 degree heading change (diagonal?!) to close.
AR Comms setup
FD 7 PF,PM
FD 2 inc Guard (ATC) Nav
HF Radios to standby!
Scavenge (use cx list unless severe fuel leak)
Feeding engines directly with the scavenged fuel via body manifold.
Main AR Valve - CLOSE
All 8 boost pumps - ON
All T-E manifolds - OPEN
All body and override pumps - OFF
Body to Engine manifold - OPEN
Scavenge - ON
Expected Tanker offset, turn range, timing FL220, closure
Offset 9-11nm
Turn range 23-24nm
50nm slant = 2 mins
30 nm slant = 30 sec
closure 13-14nm/min
Loss of visual during a turn
Disconnect/breakaway
Or call “loss of visual contact”
Transition to instruments
Decelerate 10kts
Roll wings level
Descend 1000ft below tanker
When stable, return to tankers heading
