9Muscles Flashcards
Muscle that flattens the cheek yewhen contracted; position food for chewing
Buccinator
Flat muscle that raises eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead; creates a surprised look
Frontalis
Fan shaped muscle that extends from the temporal bone to the mandible; works synergistically with other chewing muscles
Temporalis
Extends from the corners of the mouth to the cheekbone; called the smiling muscle
Zygomaticus
Muscle of the upper back and neck. Contraction of this muscle tilts the heads so that the face looks up at the sky; also moves the shoulder
Trapezius
Sphincter muscle encircling the mouth called the kissing muscle
Orbicularis Oris
Muscles on either side of the neck that cause flexion of the head as in praying; contraction of only one of these muscles rotates the head
Sternocleidomastoid
A chewing muscle that works synergistically with the temporalis muscle to close the jaw
Masseter
Sphincter muscle encircling the eyes; assists in winking, blinking, and squinting
Orbicularis oculi
Works antagonistically to the sternocleidomastoid
Trapezius
A spasm of this muscle causes torticollis, or wryneck
Sternocleidomastoid
Attaches to the collar bone, breastbone, and temporal bone
Sternocleidomastoid
Muscle that raises eyelid
Levator palpebrae superioris
Your frowning and pouting muscle; also depresses the mandible
Platysma
Muscles that are responsible for raising and lowering the rib cage during breathing; bbq ribs
Intercostals
Includes the Intenal oblique, External oblique, Trasversus, and Rectus
Abdominal muscles
A white line that extends from the sternum to the pubic bone; formed by the aponeurosis of the abdominal muscles on opposite sides of the abdomen
Linea alba
Muscles located on the medial surface of the thigh; horseback riders use these muscles to grip the horse with their thighs
Adductors
Muscle that lies along the posterior surface of the humerus; extends the forearm and is used to bear weight in crutch-walking
Triceps-brachii
Longest muscle in the body that is used to sit cross legged (lotus position)
Sartorius
Muscle that shrugs the shoulders and moves the head
Trapezius
Jagged muscle that resembles the teeth of a saw; lowers the shoulder and moves the arm, as in pushing a cart
Serratus anterior
Includes the rectus femoris, vastus medialis vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedius
Quadriceps femoris
Includes the biceps femoris
Hamstrings
Large broad muscle that forms the anterior chest wall; connects the humerus with the clavicle and structures of the chest; anterior chest muscle that adducts and flexes the arm across the chest
Pectoralis major
Muscle that flexes the forearm when you ask a child to make a muscle this is the one that pops us
Biceps Brachii
Large, broad muscle over the middle and lower back; lowers the shoulders and brings the arms back, as in swimming and rowing
Latissimus dorsi
The Achilles tendon attaches to the soleus and this muscle to the heel bone; the calf muscle that is used in plantar flexion; toe dancers muscle
Gastrocnemius
Largest muscle in the body that forms part of the buttocks; you sit on this muscle
Gluteus maximus
Muscle that forms the shoulder pads; positions the arms in a scarecrow position
Deltoid
The chief muscle of inhilation
Diaphragm
Located over the shin bone; causes dorsiflexion
Tibialis Anterior
Works synergistically with the gastrocnemius
Soleus
