9E- Building materials Flashcards
Metal properties
@room temp are solids
Melting and boiling points are usually high
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Rigid when thick, bendy when thin
Malleable - can be hammered without cracking
Ductile can be stretched into thin wires
Only iron nickel and cobalt are magnetic
Hydrochloric acid name and formula as a salt
HCl - chloride
Hsmall2SOsmall4 - sulphate
HNOsmall 3 - nitrate
What is an alloy
A mixture of metals or metals mixed with other materials
Why are metals malleable
Because they are elements and contain only one type of atom and their atoms line up in layers so when a force is applied the layers slide over each other and the block shape changes without breaking. In an alloy the mix of atoms makes it difficult for it to xxpalide across each other
Iron oxide is
Crumble red flakes which is rust
Our rain water ph
Acid rain ph
7 neutral
5.5 acidic
Rocks metals and concret are what type of resources
Non renewable
To build sustainably we need to
Re use materials form old buildings or use materials that have been recycled
