Q

Filtering process

A

Filter paper is placed in the funnel which is placed in a conical flask . Filter paper has small holes to let small particles of liquid through but not a solid. The solid that gets left behind is called the residue and the liquid in the flask is the filterate

Q

What is chromatography

A

A way of separating different substances that are dissolved in a solution

18
Q

Process of chromatography

A

Chromatography paper will have different ink samples on it and will be attached to a rod across a beaker with a little water on it . The water will not touch the ink .

19
Q

Why does chromatography work

A

Different chemicals are made up of different sized particles . When they are dissolved in a liquid the particles separate out different speeds so are spread out at different instances . Different solvents can also be used

20
Q

Describe how distillation makes pure water

A

The flask which is getting heated contains inky water . The water then turns into water vapour. It then goes down the inner tube of the Liebig condenser where the water vapour condenses into a liquid and pure water goes inti the bucket . The outer tube of the Liebig condenser is filled with flowing cold water to keep it cool . It has a part at the top to let it out and a part at the bottom to let the cold water in .
