8E Water Flashcards
Sea water has
Salt dissolved in it which can make us ill
What is a mixture
Lot of things jumbled up together
Filtering will separate
A substance which is insoluble from a liquid
Filtering process
Filter paper is placed in the funnel which is placed in a conical flask . Filter paper has small holes to let small particles of liquid through but not a solid. The solid that gets left behind is called the residue and the liquid in the flask is the filterate
What is a solution
A solid dissolved in a liquid
In a solution the liquid is called what and the solid is called what
Solvent
Solute
A substance which can dissolve is called
Soluble
A substance which can not dissolve is called
Insoluble
A solution is always
Transparent
The total mass of a solution is
The mass of the solute added to the mass of the solvent
When a solution is saturated it
Contains as much dissolved solid as it can
Most solids dissolve more when
The solute is hotter
We can show water contains other chemicals by
Heating it so that the water will evaporate. And leave the chemicals behind
The chenicals which are left behind are called
Salts
Water which contains chemicals that stop soap from lathering is called
Hard water the opposite is soft water
Common as,t is
Sodium chloride
What is chromatography
A way of separating different substances that are dissolved in a solution
Process of chromatography
Chromatography paper will have different ink samples on it and will be attached to a rod across a beaker with a little water on it . The water will not touch the ink .
Why does chromatography work
Different chemicals are made up of different sized particles . When they are dissolved in a liquid the particles separate out different speeds so are spread out at different instances . Different solvents can also be used
Describe how distillation makes pure water
The flask which is getting heated contains inky water . The water then turns into water vapour. It then goes down the inner tube of the Liebig condenser where the water vapour condenses into a liquid and pure water goes inti the bucket . The outer tube of the Liebig condenser is filled with flowing cold water to keep it cool . It has a part at the top to let it out and a part at the bottom to let the cold water in .
